After leaving further education Tom Donovan joined Ken Trotman Ltd., then a division of Arms & Armour Press, where he received his first introduction to military book publishing and antiquarian bookselling.
Leaving to set up Tom Donovan Military Books in 1984, he went on to establish Tom Donovan Publishing in 1988 and published around forty books on military subjects before selling out to Spellmount in 1998.
In the meantime, a burgeoning partnership with Brian Turner, Turner Donovan Military Books, rapidly became established as leading specialist dealers in rare and desirable works on British military history from around 1800 to 1945.
Tom Donovan authored Hot Blood and Cold Steel: Life and Death in the Trenches of the First World War (1993) jointly with Dr. Andy Simpson and The Hazy Red Hell: Fighting Experiences on the Western Front 1914-1918 (1999). Both these works are currently reissued in paperback by Tempus Publishing.
Tom has an abiding interest in the First World War and is a regular visitor to the battlefields of the Western Front. Another special interest is the Second World War in Burma, to which can be added the Indian Army role in both conflicts. He is the Secretary of the Chattri Memorial Group, looking after the Indian War Memorial in his home town of Brighton, England, and organising exhibitions and events commemorating the services of the Indian Army in the First World War.
Tom feels that Tom Donovan Editions helps fulfil a creative need whilst also contributing valuable texts to the field of military history. He is excited about the prospects for this venture and various projects that are in preparation.
